Peter Bergen, a national security analyst, writes on the recent White House conference on extremism (Feb 15) where poverty was emphasized as a root cause of terrorism. His article says that terrorists spring out of all backgrounds, but in many cases are middle class or wealthy, and educated. The ideology of ISIS and like-minded groups is rooted in Salafist ultra-fundmentalist interpretations of Islam.
