The Pentagon made the unusual and controversial move to name this new modern ship the "Trump Class Battleship".
Image: US Navy, Dec 2025 Naming a new class of ships after a current president does not align well with long-standing U.S. Navy ship naming conventions. Historically, capital ships are named after U.S. states - as in Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey, or Wisconsin. No modern U.S. capital ship is named after a living political figure - and ship classes are rarely named after individuals at all. If they are, it is long after death and with broad historical consensus. Naming the Next Generation Battleship after a sitting president is inconsistent with U.S. Navy naming conventions, is politically divisive, and cuts against long-held naval traditions. Until a class name is formally approved, defense journalists will typically rely on capability-based or program-based labels. Until the U.S. Navy, typically the Secretary of the Navy, assigns a formal class name, notional program labels are used. The Navy announced that the proposed name for the first of these battleships is the "USS Defiant", so that could likely mean that the new battleships will be known as the "Defiant-class" battleship. The Navy says this new class of battleships will play a central role in "The Golden Fleet", a new type of Navy fleet. References: Navy Ship Names: Background for Congress,
