The age of the Battleship was coming to an end as World War II finally ended. Aircraft carriers and the airplanes they launched could reach out farther than the big guns of battleships. Korean War. The USS Missouri (BB-63), USS New Jersey (BB-62), USS Wisconin (BB-64), and USS Iowa (BB-61) were engaged during the Korean War principally for shore bombardment. Vietnam War. The USS New Jersey (BB-62) provided naval gunfire along the coast of Vietnam from 1968-1969. Lebanon. The USS New Jersey (BB-62) provided gunfire support for U.S. and allied dorces in 1983-1984. Gulf War. During Operation Desert Storm (1991) the USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Wisconsin (BB-64) provided navval gunfire and missile strikes against Iraqi forces. End of an Era. The last batteship in active service was the USS Missouri (BB-63), which was decommissioned in March 1992, one year after the first Gulf War ended. Three battleships had been in reserve status in 1992 for a brief period of time. Next Generation Battleship (NGB). The Pentagon revealed plans for building several new and modern battleships. The laser-armed vessel with by a large guided-missile surface combatant designed for hypersonic strike and nuclear deterrence. The Next Generation Battleship (NGB) is informally being referred to as the "Trump Class Battleship". Typically, battleships are named after states, as in the "Iowa Class Battleship".
