Evacuation from Sudan

Daily Updates

April 25 - Tuesday

UK Troops in Port Sudan? A team of British troops were understood to have been flown into Port Sudan to scope out the options for any rescue mission of civilians. Two ships may be providing some support to an evacuation effort - the RFA Cardigan Bay and HMS Lancaster. At least 2,000 to 4,000 UK nationals remain in Sudan. There are reports that the UK is ready to begin a large-scale evacuation. (Reuters, Apr 25, 2023). The effort is supported by RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus; a permanent UK mlitary base with Airbus A400Ms and C-130Js. This past weekend UK diplomats and their families were were flown in miltary aircraft from the Wadi Seidna air base in Sudan. April 24 - Monday

UK Evac. Britain's elite forces, including SAS and Royal Marines, rescued United Kingdom diplomats and their families from Sudan amid bloody conflict between the country's army and a powerful paramilitary group. British soldiers linked up with the UK personnel where they were 'sheltering' at the UK embassy and accompanied the group on an 18-mile journey to an airfield. They infiltrated during the night -flown in on an American aircraft. Then they got hold of several local vehicles and drove into Khartoum where they linked up with the diplomatic staff. Once linkup was effected, the party of soldiers and about 30 evacuees drove to an airfield located outside of the city and boarded two Royal Air Force transport planes that had arrived from Cyprus.  "Who Dares Saves", Daily Mail, April 23, 2023.

April 23 - Sunday

United Kingdom. A statement by the UK Ministry of Defence stated that UK Armed Forces undertook a military operation alongside the United States, France and other allies. The British Embassy staff and their dependents were evacuated from Khartoum due to the escalating threats against diplomats. The operation involved more than 1,200 personnel from 16 Air Asssault Brigade, the Royal Marines and the RAF". It is believed the evacuees were flown from Africa to Cyprus. Aircraft used in the operation include a C-130J and A400M. See "British military aircraft assisting in Sudan evacuation", UK Defence Journal, April 23, 2023.
