Wagner Group

Home > Countries > Russia > Wagner Group

The Wagner Group is a private military corporation closely associated with the Russian government. It has been used as a proxy force by Russia in Syria, Libya, Mali, Ukraine, and other countries. The Wagner Group has taken an important role in Russia's occupation of Ukraine, conducting combat operations on the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

At the beginning of the Ukraine war the Wagner Group had about 5,000 seasoned fighters. The company's units in Ukraine numbered as much as 50,000 (Feb 2023) due to massive recruitment of Russian prisoners, foreign fighters, and other Russians.

The Wagner Group revolted against the Russian senior military leadership in late June 2023. The head of the paramilitary organization accused senior defense officials of not prosecuting the Ukraine offensive in an effective manner. Thousands of Wagner Group fighters left Ukraine and occupied the Russian Southern Military District headquarters in Rostov. It then proceeded to convoy along the main route heading towards Moscow. It stopped 120 miles from Moscow. The leader of the Wagner Group went into exile in Belarus.
