Greenland
Greenland is a semi-atonomus territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has about 55,000 inhabitants, the island covers 836,000 square miles. It was discovered by the Norse explorer Erik the Red who first landed in Greenland in 982 CE, more than 1,000 years ago. The first Norse colony was established circa 986 CE. Denmark gained the island in 1721 and has had a presence there ever since. Pituffik Space Base. The U.S. base was formerly known as Thule Air Base. As of 2026, it is the only U.S. military installation on Greenland. As of early 2026 there were about 150 U.S. service members stationed there.
