Pituffik Space BaseThis U.S. base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, is on Greenland's western edge about 1,000 miles from the island's capital of Nuuk. Temperatures routinely drop to -50 during the polar night darkness that last more than three months a year. It has a two-mile long runway and a deep water port. The base hosts about 150 U.S. military personnel (as of early 2026).
