The Carl Gustaf 84 mm Recoilless Rifle is the Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapons System (MAAWS). The 22-pound M3 was first used by the 75th Ranger Regiment in 1993. Other SOF units in USSOCOM introduced it four years later.
The Gustaf is a very valuable combat weapon but it has a lot of over-pressure and can affect the health of the gunner and gunner's assistance. The United States Special Operations Command has done a lot of research into the health effects of the weapon and has instituted mitigating measures to reduce the possibility of brain damage.
