Natalie Fiorilli) The OA-1K Skyraider II is a light attack aircraft developed for U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The aircraft is a militarized derivative of the Air Tractor AT-802 crop duster. The first aircraft was handed over to AFSOC in April 2025 at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The aircraft is turboprop-powered, has two seats, and can carry a number of different weapons systems on eight underwing pylons. It has multiple radios and datalinks for communications with other aircraft and ground units. It can loiter for hours on station supporting ground forces. The mission of the OA-1k Skyraider II is close air support, precision strike, or armed ISR. It provides a close air support function for the special operations forces spread out in a wide area in a permissive environment as well as supporting the joint force. The Skyraider II requires a much smaller maintenance package and costs less per flying our than other conventional or other special operations aircraft. The tailwheel gives the Skyraider II the capability for short takeoffs and landings as well as the ability to operate from unimproved or austere airfields. Its name comes from the A-1 Skyraider that was in the Air Force's inventory from 1946 to the early 1980s. The A-1 saw extensive service during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
