Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB)

Home > SOF > NSW > ESB

Special Operations Forces (SOF) will sometimes conduct their missions from ships. One type used frequently by Navy SEALs and other special operations forces is the Expeditionary Sea Base or ESB. The ship is a large command and control platform for seabasing Marines, SEALs, and other SOF units.

USS Canley Commissioned. An Expeditionary Sea Base ship (ESB) was recently commissioned (16 Feb 2024) on February 17, 2024, in Coronado, California. It will support a variety of missions to include the staging of Special Operations Forces (SOF). It has a four-spot flight deck, mission deck, and hangar. The ship is named in honor of a U.S. Marine, John L. Canley. (DOD, 16 Feb 2024)
