Kharq IslandKharq Island is a small island located in the northern Persian Gulf about 20 miles from the Iranian mainland. It is a small island - roughly 5 miles (8 km) long and 2-3 miles (3-4 km) wide. However, it holds disproportionate strategic importance due to its extensive oil export infrastructure.
The island serves as the principal loading point for crude oil transported via pipeline from mainland Iranian oil fields to deep-water tanker berths capable of handling very large crude oil carriers. The island is considered one of the most critical energy node in the Middle East. About 90% of Irans crude oil exports pass through the Islands terminals. This is an extreme vulnerability for Iran. Iran maintains a modest military presence on the island including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval elements, air defense systems, missile storage facilities, radar sites, and security forces. Kharq Island is within range of Iranian fires from the mainland. Ballistic missiles, drones, and small seaborne drones are all available.
